Masks, masks, masques! July 2020 at Oleander Aesthetics

masks

Hello all!

It's been super exciting to be back in the treatment room and just in time to celebrate
Oleander Aesthetics 7th anniversary.
Whoa, time flies!
Whether it's at work or home we have increased our cleaning, mask wearing and PPE throughout the day.  Does anyone else consider themselves a disinfectant connoisseur at this point?
If there's been one common skin concern lately it's the side effects from the masks.
While we protect ourselves and others, we’re sometimes left with unpleasant breakouts or irritation.  Here’s what you need to know about how they can affect your skin and tips for protection.

Breakouts

Wearing a mask or other protective gear around your face can lead to a type of acne called acne mechanica, caused by friction (physical disruption to the skin). When something is constantly rubbing up against your skin, the combination of friction, heat, and pressure can be a trigger for breakouts.   Start the day with a gentle cleanser and hydrated skin before wearing your protective mask.  Decrease usage of foundations, powders, blushes and lipsticks.   You may need to use a calming or gentle toner 1 to 2x throughout the day if you wear your masks for an extended period.  Don't forget to reapply your SPF.
Your nighttime skincare routine is SO important. Stay on top of it so that it doesn’t get out of control. Do NOT over exfoliate at this time.  Be sure to clean/wash your cloth face masks every night.  Acne-free laundry means you must avoid additives, enzymes, chlorine bleach, and fabric softeners.

Irritation/Dryness

Are you feeling more sensitivity, red marks, bumps, dryness. etc?
These are signs of inflammation. Start your day with clean, hydrated, protected skin before applying your protective mask.  Your nighttime skincare routine should be gentle with no exfoliation. Use a Cooling Masque or cold roll to help calm and soothe your irritated skin.  If you're experiencing irritation on your ears or nose from your protective mask. A thin barrier of Aquaphor or Vaseline will help.
