Blackhead or Sebaceous Filament?

Blackhead or Sebaceous Filament?

Blackheads or Sebaceous filaments:  Which Do You Have?
Let's distinguish the difference so you can identify what you're seeing and learn the best skincare tips to care for these pesky pores.

Sebaceous filaments are a common source of confusion, often mistaken for blackheads because both can appear as tiny, pin-like dots that make pores seem more visible. However, there’s an important difference: blackheads are clogged pores, typically filled with oxidized oil and dead skin cells, giving them that dark, raised look. Sebaceous filaments, on the other hand, are natural, tube-shaped structures within the pore, essential for transporting oil along the skin’s surface to keep it balanced and protected.

If you notice a pore that’s dark, slightly raised, and larger in appearance, it’s likely a blackhead. Sebaceous filaments, by contrast, have a clearer, yellowish, or grayish tone and often show up in clusters along the T-zone, where the skin tends to be oiler.

It’s worth noting that sebaceous filaments are completely normal and healthy; they’re an integral part of the skin’s function. Nearly everyone has them, and their visibility is primarily influenced by genetics. Because they’re necessary for the skin’s oil distribution, it’s not possible to permanently remove them—they’re designed to refill after extractions.  Although blackheads and sebaceous filaments can be tempting to squeeze, I strongly recommend leaving them until your next facial to avoid irritation or scarring.

Which Ingredients Should I Use to Minimize them?
These are hands-down the best products and ingredients for minimizing sebaceous filaments and blackheads..

Salicylic Acid (BHA)
One of the best ingredients you can use to minimize sebaceous filaments and blackheads is salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), which means it’s able to cut through oil and get deep into your pores. This will allow it to start breaking up the gunk clogging your pores, minimizing the appearance of the filaments and preventing more from cropping up.

Retinol and Retinoids
Retinol and retinoids can also be really effective against sebaceous filaments and blackheads. They increase the rate of cell turnover, which helps keep dead skin cells from getting stuck in your pores. This, in turn, helps regulate oil flow and prevents sebum from building up and hardening.

Physical Scrubs
A gentle, mechanical action can be super effective at sloughing off filaments so they’re less noticeable. Just be sure to select a gentle scrub with smooth, rounded beads.

Moisturizer
Finally, be sure to keep your skin well-hydrated use a moisturizer. While salicylic acid, mandelic and retinol are amazing for keeping pores clear, they have the potential to dry out your skin. If sebaceous filaments are a concern, this is the last thing you want. Having dry, dead cells on the surface of your skin will keep oil trapped underneath. This causes it to build up inside your pores, potentially making sebaceous filaments worse (not to mention they’ll appear more visible if the surrounding skin is dehydrated).
