A Fresh Start for your Skin Barrier
Happy New Year!
A new year is the perfect time to check in on your skin. If your skin has been feeling uncomfortable, reactive, tight, flakey, breakouts or unusually dry, your skin barrier may be asking for a reset. I’ve had several clients come in recently after trips to Colorado, surprised by how irritated and uncomfortable their skin became in such a short time. While cold, dry climates can definitely trigger barrier disruption, winter isn’t the only culprit. Everyday habits, hormonal changes, stress, genetics, harsh skincare choices, and environmental factors can quietly weaken your skin’s natural defenses too.
So what is the skin barrier? The skin barrier, also known as the stratum corneum, is the outermost layer of the epidermis, the top layer of our skin. It acts as a protective barrier against environmental aggressors such as pollutants, pathogens, and UV radiation, while also preventing water loss and maintaining hydration levels within the skin. A healthy skin barrier is essential for maintaining overall skin health and function
This season, instead of overcorrection or chasing trends, let’s focus on what actually works. Here are 5 skin barrier resolutions to help your skin stay calm, resilient, and hydrated this new year.
Resolution 1
Gentle Cleansing
Using overly harsh or stripping cleansers can disrupt the lipid barrier, leading to dryness and irritation. Use mild, gentle cleansers that effectively cleanse the skin without stripping away its natural oils.
Emma's Fav: VITAL C hydrating facial cleanser and ORMEDIC® balancing facial cleanser
Resolution 2
Don't Retire Your SPF
Even on grey days. Even when you're mostly indoors, UV damage happens all year round and consistent protection is key to keeping your barrier strong.

Resolution 3
Prioritize Deep Hydration
Dehydrated skin appears dull, highlights fine lines and limits how well products proform. Hydration starts internally, but sealing in moisture with the right hydrators is just as important.
Emma's Fav: VITAL C hydrating repair crème and Face Reality Cran-Peptide Cream
Resolution 4
Exfoliate with Intention
More isn't better. There's a clear difference between healthy exfoliation and irritation. An exfoliant 2-3 times a week is generally enough for non compromised skin..
Emma's Fav: VITAL C hydrating enzyme masque
Resolution 5
Give Your Products Time
Healing compromised skin requires a commitment to observation, patience, and a willingness to adapt. Simplify your routine. When repairing your skin barrier, less is more. Think of this period as a detox for your skin. Temporarily strip down your routine to the basics; a gentle cleanser, hydrating serum, moisturiser and mineral SPF. Trust the process, and over time, your skin will thank you.
